Can you comment on some features of Bronte's narrative style? For what themes does the narrator seem to prepare us? Although Bronte's novel vividly represents the limitations on Victorian middle-class women, however, it demonstrates how difficult it was for Bronte, as for most mid-Victorian writers, to portray working-class activism without resorting to stereotypes. Bronte was also influenced by her friend Elizabeth Gaskell's Mary Barton (1847), which had portrayed the emotions of John Barton, a Chartist, with at least limited sympathy. 1848 was the year of the Great Charter and widespread social unrest Shirley was Bronte's attempt to widen the scope of her writing after having published Jane Eyre, an intensely subjective novel about the life of a governess.

This book would be great for a social studies unit on the Civil War. Read aloud to make a curricular connection It is fascinating, and I wish I read this when I was younger so I knew what a Jayhawker was and how dedicated to freeing the slaves they were. I love how a twelve year old can be so brave, and risk his life for the better of the country. I enjoyed the suspense within this novel. She often co-writes with John Luis Beatty She taught Writing Fiction for Children at several branches of the University of California. The biggest issue, though, that I think a lot of readers will have with this book is the age gap in the romance. On the off case that it's entirely my fault for missing that, I'm not counting off for how confusing the beginning was, otherwise that probably would've been enough to knock this down to 1 star. The entire beginning of the book is so confusing, though I don't know if that's because this is a spin-off of Hitorijime My Boyfriend, which I didn't realize until I had finished this manga. On a similar note, the dialogue is really poorly formatted! Conversations overlap each other a lot and many of the speech bubbles don't clearly indicate who's talking, especially when the speaker is "off-screen", so there were entire conversations in this book where I had no clue who was saying what. The biggest pro is that the art is fun and cute, but the immediate downside to the art is that so many of the characters look so much alike that it's sometimes difficult to tell who you're looking at. the cons definitely outweighed the pros with this one. One niece is also more likely than two to carry a kodak and take interest in it, since she has nothing else, except her uncle, to interest her, and instances occur when she takes interest neither in the uncle nor in the journey. As many more may come as like, but one niece is enough for the uncle to talk to, and one niece is much more likely than two to listen. For convenience of travel in France, where hotels, in out-of-the-way places, are sometimes wanting in space as well as luxury, the nieces shall count as one only. The following lines, then, are written for nieces, or for those who are willing, for those, to be nieces in wish. No valid objection can be offered to this choice in the verse. The relationship, too, is convenient and easy, capable of being anything or nothing, at the will of either party, like a Mohammedan or Polynesian or American marriage. Nieces have been known to read in early youth, and in some cases may have read their uncles. The same objections do not apply to the word "niece." The change restores the verse, and, to a very great degree, the fact. Amy, the youngest sister, is the artist of the family and aspires to a life of refinement and elegance. Beth, the gentle and kind third sister, is the heart of the family, and her tragic fate brings the sisters even closer together. Jo, the spirited and independent second sister, struggles to find her place in the world as a writer and ultimately learns the value of compromise and love. Meg, the eldest sister, dreams of a life of luxury, but soon realizes that true happiness comes from the simple joys of family and friends. Along the way, they experience love, loss, and the joys of sisterhood that will make you laugh, cry, and cheer them on every step of the way. The novel follows the lives of Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy March as they navigate the challenges of growing up and finding their place in the world. The novel is loosely based on Alcott's own life, and her experiences with her three sisters serve as the inspiration for the story. This heartwarming tale has captured the hearts of readers for generations and continues to be a must-read for anyone who loves a great coming-of-age story.
